Hello, I’m Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I’m going to answer the question, what causes diabetes. Let me start off by saying I am NOT a doctor, I have no medical training whatsoever, I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I am just a guy with diabetes who wants to help educate others. That being said, I have been asked to answer what causes diabetes in 3 and a half minutes.

So let’s get started. When talking about diabetes, there really is a myriad of different types of diabetes and I hope to get into all of them at some point, but today we are going to focus on Type 2 Diabetes because that is the most common.

People with Type 2 diabetes have a malfunction in their bodies that doesn’t allow them to use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to keep everything in check, but, over time it isn’t able to keep up and make enough insulin.

OK, we know what it is, but the question is what causes it.

That is not an easy question to answer. But many scientists think genetic susceptibility and environmental factors are the most likely triggers of type 2 diabetes.

Having certain genes or combinations of genes may increase or decrease a person’s risk for developing the disease. The role of genes is suggested by the high rate of type 2 diabetes in families and identical twins and wide variations in diabetes prevalence by ethnicity.

The known genes appear to affect insulin production rather than insulin resistance. Researchers are constantly looking at other ways genes can interact with one another and with environmental factors to cause diabetes.

Physical inactivity and obesity are strongly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. People who are genetically susceptible to type 2 diabetes are more vulnerable when these risk factors are present.

An imbalance between caloric intake and physical activity can lead to obesity, which causes insulin resistance and is common in people with type 2 diabetes. Central obesity, in which a person has excess abdominal fat, is a major risk factor not only for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes but also for heart and blood vessel disease, also called cardiovascular disease.

The American Diabetes Association says that people who develop type 2 diabetes are more likely to have the following characteristics:

-age 45 or older
-overweight or obese
–physically inactive
parent or sibling with diabetes
-family background that is African American, Alaska Native, -American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific -Islander American
-history of giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
-history of gestational diabetes
-high blood pressure—140/90 or above—or being treated for high blood pressure

There literally are thousands of studies with hundreds of factors that cause diabetes. The list in front of you isn’t exhaustive, but if you have Type 2 diabetes you probably fall under one or more of these categories.

The good news is, diabetes is not fatal. With proper diet, exercise and often medication you can live a rather normal happy life.

Gestational Diabetes: Managing Risk During and After Pregnancy Video – Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Ellen Seely, MD, Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension at Brigham and Women’s Hospital discusses the health risks associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during and after pregnancy. Dr. Seely also describes Balance After Baby, a web-based program designed to educate women on eating healthfully and increasing their physical activity, with the goal of helping them lose their pregnancy weight within a year of giving birth.

GDM is a type of diabetes that occurs only in pregnancy. It comes on in the second half of pregnancy and it goes away after delivery. In the US it’s estimated that five percent of all pregnancies are complicated by GDM. The rates of GDM are higher in Hispanic and non-white populations, ranging from ten to 20 percent of all pregnancies.

Obesity is one of the main risk factors for GDM. In the United States, most health centers screen all women for gestational diabetes because obesity is becoming so common in the overall population.

Gestational diabetes can impact the health of the mother and the fetus, as well as the newborn. Women with GDM have an increased risk of preeclampsia, which is a type of high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy. Preeclampsia is a serious condition that can lead to early delivery. Women who have gestational diabetes may also have larger babies, increasing their risk of cesarean section.

While GDM goes away after pregnancy, the health risks persist. Research has found that 50 to 70 percent of women who have gestational diabetes may develop Type 2 diabetes later in life. Research has also found that babies born to mothers with GDM, have a higher birth weight and may become obese during adolescence, increasing their risk of developing diabetes and other conditions such as high blood pressure.

The Pregnancy and Diabetes Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital offers multidisciplinary care to women with GDM. The program includes a high risk obstetrician, two diabetes specialists, a nutritionist, and a nurse practitioner who is certified in diabetes education. The first approach to treatment is to control blood glucose levels with healthy eating and physical activity. Lifestyle changes, healthy eating and physical activity, are effective in controlling blood glucose levels about 75 percent of women with GDM. If the lifestyle changes don’t work, insulin therapy is started to control a mother’s blood sugar for the rest of her pregnancy.

Diabetes, also called diabetes mellitus, has become a very common health problem.

There are two main types of diabetes- type 1 diabetes in which the body does not produce insulin and type 2 diabetes in which the body does not produce enough insulin or the insulin that is produced does not work properly.

1. Bitter Gourd,

Bitter gourd, also known as bitter melon, can be helpful for controlling diabetes due to its blood glucose lowering effects. It tends to influence the glucose metabolism all over your body rather than a particular organ or tissue.

Drink some bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach each morning. First remove the seeds of two to three bitter gourds and use a juicer to extract the juice. Add some water and then drink it. Follow this treatment daily in the morning for at least two months.
Also, you can include one dish made of bitter gourd daily in your diet.

2. Cinnamon,

Powdered cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin activity. It contains bioactive components that can help prevent and fight diabetes.

Mix one-half to one teaspoon of cinnamon in a cup of warm water. Drink it daily.
Another option is to boil two to four cinnamon sticks in one cup of water and allow it to steep for 20 minutes. Drink this solution daily until you see improvement.
You can also add cinnamon to warm beverages, smoothies and baked goods.

3. Fenugreek,

Fenugreek is an herb that can also be used to control diabetes, improve glucose tolerance and lower blood sugar levels due to its hypoglycaemic activity.

Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Drink the water along with the seeds in the morning on an empty stomach. Follow this remedy without fail for a few months to bring down your glucose level.
Another option is to eat two tablespoons of powdered fenugreek seeds daily with milk.

4. Black Plum,

Black plum can help a lot in controlling blood sugar level because it contains anthocyanins, ellagic acid, hydrolysable tannins etc.

Dr. Robert Lustig is an endocrinologist and professor of pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California-San Francisco. In this video, he sits down with CrossFit’s Rory McKernan to explain sugar’s toxicity, outline the stakes of sugar consumption and offer suggestions for addressing the ongoing sugar crisis.

“Sugar is toxic,” Lustig explains. “It proffers a set of biochemical alterations that are detrimental to human health—unrelated to its calories.”

In this way, Lustig says, sugar “is very much like alcohol,” and chronic metabolic diseases associated with alcohol are becoming prevalent in children with high-sugar diets.

When asked about the state of pediatric medicine in the United States, Lustig says, “We have a problem.”

Because the food industry has negatively influenced nutrition science for the last 45 years, many people still abide by the mistaken belief that a healthy diet is attained by regulating calories and saturated fat. This misconception has led to a rise in chronic metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes in adult and youth populations.

People who believe they are making healthy choices and avoiding sugar are nevertheless affected by the crisis.

“Even though you might not be sick,” Lustig says, “society is.”

In the final third of the video, Lustig outlines the necessary steps for enacting a societal intervention. These steps include educating the public, approaching sugar as an addictive substance and calling Type 2 diabetes what it is: “processed food disease.”
